Report – 18 February 2005

Eleven present tonight. The role call: Andrew, Phil, Tony, Debbie, Harvey, Marty, Brian, Ray, Cameron, Stuart W and Shane.

Lightning Tournament

Results:

Tony 2 Marty 0

Tony 1.5 Brian 0.5

Tony wrapped up second spot when he won his first game against Brian. In the second game Brian held the initiative going into the endgame with a rook and minor piece against 3 minor pieces and 50 seconds to 25 – a confusing ending for Tony to have to blitz. But Brian played slowly and nutted out a combination that captured a piece. With Brian having 3 seconds left and Tony 7 seconds, Tony offered a gentlemanly draw which Brian accepted, thus moving Brian one rung up the final standings.

And thus ends the lightning tournament for 2005.

(Although there will be further lightning play at the St David’s Day tournament next week. The Chief Grand Druid has decreed that the time controls for this year’s tournament will be 3 minutes + 3 sec - free move Bronstein format).
