Lightning Tournament

Results:

Andrew 2 Harvey 0

Harvey 2 Mark 0

Andrew 2 Peter 0

Tony 2 Harvey 0

Phil 2 Brian 0

Tony 1½ Mark ½

Harvey 1 Brian 1 (This fixture had already been played and was mistakenly replayed tonight – with the same result!)

Tony 2 Peter 0

Marty 1½ Brian ½

Harvey 1 Peter 1

Debbie 2 Peter 0

Andrew won his two remaining fixtures 2-0 to retain the lightning title, and achieve the first hat-trick of Lightning Tournament wins since Joe Tarnawski in the min-1990s. Tony won five and drew one on the night, and is likely to have done enough to achieve second placing ahead of Phil Kirkman who won his final two games.

Debbie won the last two games of the night against Peter to ‘gain a bit of respectability’ in the final standings, as she put it. Marty and Peter managed wins to ensure that Mark will finish bottom of the heap this time, in spite of an impressive debut including a draw tonight against Tony. Indeed, never before has a player come last in a round-robin tournament at The Gap after scoring more than 25% of possible points (as Mark did with 4½ from 16).

45 Minute Tournament

Result of Third Place Match:

Debbie Jenkins 1 Ray Adams 0

Due to Harvey’s backlog of games in the Lightning it was decided that Ray should play Debbie for third place. Surprisingly Ray played the French defence, but Debbie still managed to win, although she expressed concerned that Ray was doing some detective work on her openings in the post-match analysis!

This match completes the 45 Minute Tournament for 2004/05.

Quote of the night

“You went off the rails like a bad chess computer at the end there” – Andrew to Peter after the first of their two lightning games.

“Oh well……………”, then “Well’s there’s a difference between a chess computer and a person” – Peter

“I think you should get more George in you. Or maybe you should get more Ray in you” – Marty to Debbie
