Eleven players turned up to the first club meeting for 2005. These included the seven players who played in the Lightning Tournament tonight, Stuart who refused to play in the Lightning Tournament (tonight or any other night!), Harvey who showed up late and only had time for his 45 minute game, and two newcomers Shane and Billy who we hope to see coming back in future weeks.
Lightning Tournament
Nine sets of games were played tonight.
All players in this tournament must have played at least one game by 21 Jan 2005 to enter, as well as paying all membership and tournament fees. There will be six nights to complete fixtures: Jan 7, 14, 21; Feb 4, 11, 18. Due to the estimated number of entries (14 at present), each round will consist of two games between players (rather than four).

45 Minute tournament 2004 results in detail
Tonight’s quotes are from various players in response to the question:
WHAT ARE YOUR CHESS AMBITIONS FOR 2005?
“My ambition is to not cheat at Lightning Chess” – George Flitcroft-Smith
“My ambition is to play lots of tournament games and see if I can do better than in the past” – Peter Hiller
“My chess ambitions for 2005:
Obviously to achieve these ends I need to improve my middle/end play.” – James Hiller
“My ambition is to win the unrated prize in some tournament.” – Phil Kirkman
“My ambitions:
“My ambition is to restrict my collapse in rating to under 500.” – Brian
“I have 3 chess ambitions for the coming year...
i) To win either the Handicap or Maiden trophy.
ii) To play the French competently.
iii) To beat Debbie more often than she beats me.” – Marty Chadwick
“I have 3 chess ambitions for the coming year...
i) To have my opening repertoire decided upon and recorded.
ii) To begin to understand and use the technique behind the old endgame saying, "it's now just a matter of technique"
iii) To maintain my win/lose ratio against Marty, and at all costs not allow him to overtake me!” – Debbie Jenkins
“Ambitions are as follows:
(1) To improve on middle game play so as to make appropriate plans in relation to the positions, and so avoid the bad moves I make that give opening advantages away.
(2) To deal better with the irregular opening lines used by some players, so as to gain the appropriate advantage,. Also deal better when opponents play the exchange variation against my French.
(3) To improve on my last effort of 5/7 in the Flood Cup.
(4) To participate in the 1 Hour tournament, but avoid 5 minute chess, because it is likely to mitigate against ambition number 1.
(5) If I fail in most of my objectives, rather than discontentedly cease coming, to continue attending at least about fortnightly. My most important objective is to remain happy and sociable, and a good representative and ambassador of the Christian gospel toward the members in the Chess Club.” – Ray Adams
