Brian decided that he was going to be the star tonight. He was the second to show up at the club, which was unprecedented for someone who rarely is seen before 8.30pm. Then he decided that he would play Debbie and to prove some obscure point relating to an AGM proposal that was carried, and to which he didn’t totally agree with, he decided to start the clock. In his defence he did mention to Andrew that this would only be done in defence. Removing this defence, Debbie appeared while Andrew was busy (with an ant plague in the refreshments container), and Brian did nothing to disarm her of the impression that he was totally serious about starting the clock, prompting comments from Debbie such as “well, if he’s doing that I’m pulling out of the tournament). Others got involved, and Brian continued arguing. Then when Andrew got back and it was eventually decided that Brian was not going to go through with starting the clock on Debbie, Brian announced that he didn’t want to play tonight as he had something else to do, and was just here to prove a point. Then five minutes later he sat down and played Mark (and won!). All very odd!
The other odd story concerns Stuart who decided that since his car was in the garage being repaired that he would take his evening constitutional by walking to and from the club. From West Ashgrove to The Gap and back that is, which is about three to four kilometres each way on a hot humid night. Stuart is past 80 years old, yet managed to do this, which is probably beyond the capabilities of some younger club members! However, we ask you Stuart to consider giving someone a phone call next time. We’ll be happy to give you a lift!
Of the chess that was played, Phil confirmed himself as favourite to win Group A, while George beat Andrew in a tight tussle which could potentially see Group B end in a three way tie as it did last year.
An interesting position during the George-Andrew game:
George (W): Kg1 Qe2 Ra1 Rh3 Bc1 Bf3 a4 c3 d4 e4 e5 g2 h4
Andrew (B): Kh7 Qg7 Rb3 Rf7 Bd7 Be7 a5 c4 d5 e6 f4 g6 h5
(The next moves were 1. exd5 Rxc3, 2. d6 Bd8, 3 Bd2 Rd3).
Results:
Phil 1 Luthien 0
Harvey 1 Marty 0
George 1 Andrew 0
Debbie 1 Stuart 0
Brian 1 Mark 0
Marty 0 Phil 1
Mark 0 George 1
