Twelve games played tonight, and it was a good night to play Harvey or Debbie both of whom had shockers.
The first big upset was John winning both games against Debbie. When Brian beat Harvey, the result had to asked for twice to confirm it (something along the lines of USA 1 England 0). Debbie lost the first game against Stuart Holt when she conceded an easily avoided mate when a rook up, although she came back in the last game of the night to finally post a win.
Three players have pulled away from the field and will occupy the first three places. After them comes a pack of players occupying positions from 4 to 10, with Peter Hiller possibly able to catch them.
Andrew won both sets of games 2-0 tonight and needs to repeat this scoreline against Peter Hiller next week to win the tournament. If he concedes a draw then Tony can catch him for a play-off (provided Tony wins his remaining games).
Tonight’s results also mean that Andrew has won the Joe Tarnawski Trophy for 2004. This trophy is awarded each year to the player with the best achievement in the combined Allegro and Lightning tournaments.

Quote of the night
“I heard that it’s legal to chuck now.” – James said to Andrew, trying to start a conversation to put himself off in time trouble!
“I think George has been thrashing it.” – Brian talking about why a clock would not work.
“I was thinking about making a comeback because I was a good chucker” – HQ, finally taking up James’ unusual offer to start a conversation about cricket.
