Several important games were scheduled tonight which were to have consequences for the top of the table standings. Unfortunately Peter did not show up for his game thereby gifting George a point. One would think that this is rather grating for the next three players in the table who Peter had beaten in earlier rounds!

In games that were played Debbie had more space on the board in a sharp game against Andrew, but succumbed to time pressure and came out the worse in a two rook endgame which started with her a pawn up. Stuart Holt managed to grab a decisive advantage through a combination – this result makes it improbable that Tony will win the tournament.

James won and lost tonight. He succumbed to a combination from Brian – “I managed a combination that actually worked” boasted Brian. – “I just took the bait” was James’ response. James’ ‘win’ for the night occurred when John Curran beat Stuart Wilson, because this means that James must finish above Stuart even if he doesn’t gain any more points - due to the tie-break rules. And this will result in James avoiding the wooden spoon for the first time in a club tournament.

George is now the odds on favourite to win the tournament. He needs to avoid defeat in his last two games to win, and goes into these games with an amazing unbeaten run of 27 games in the One Hour (5 in 1992, 13 in 1993, 9 in 1994). On the down side for George is that his two remaining opponents are Debbie Jenkins and Andrew Robinson, the two players who beat him in this year’s Flood Cup.

Quote of the night

“I had an honourable defeat” – James Hiller

“I had the doorclosed in my bedroom because I didn’t want Marty to know what I was doing” – Debbie, adding to Marty’s allegations from last week.

(Attention Mrs Hiroko Willcock – don’t read this!) “He’s so desperate, he’s marrying a Japanese” – Brian, with the voice of experience, commenting on latest fiasco surrounding Bobby Fischer

“Just some Olympic related quotes regarding my match tonite

Win lose or draw tonite I wont lay down and cry like El Gerrouhj.

However if I happen to win unlikely I know I may do the Zorba the Greek dance!

If I get tired during the match I may just not move for a while just like the….. Womens VIII!”

– James pre-match email on his game with Brian
