Tonight saw two important games between top contenders. Tony entered the last 5minutes a pawn up but still with queen and rooks on the board. He offered a draw and George spent so long considering it that with 3 minutes left he accepted. Luthien got the better of Debbie who was not in the best of condition for playing chess, having a stomach bug that caused rumblings of seismic proportions.
Andrew and Brian played an evenly contested game until Brian extravagantly castled queenside into trouble and then unsoundly sacrificed a bishop when more accurate play may have resulted in devastating consequences.
Peter looked to have Marty covered until he made a passive move which gave Marty unstoppable momentum. Stuart Holt continued his climb away from the cellar with a win over John Curran.
With his best chance of attaining a second victory in the tournament, James threw away pieces left, right and centre such that he had resigned by 8:55pm. More on this in the next two paragraphs …
This week’s pre-match J Hiller exchange was:
” HILLER V WILSON
Will I be able to counter Stuart’s blitzkrieg strategy with a Patton like counter attack?
Will youthful exuberance prevail over General "Rommel" Wilson?
Let the battle be joined tonight at 8.30p.m.
No injections of chess knowledge before the match !!”
To which the reply: “I thought that Debbie was the Desert Fox? Can't Stuart be Monty?”
Post-match saw a more sombre tone:
”I was heavily distracted by two things.
1. I was moving to a new place the next morning.
2. I started my match at 8.20pm and from 8.30 to 8.50pm people were continually entering the tournament room and talking loudly when we were trying to play a competitive game.
By the 30 min mark of my game my concentration was shot to pieces.
I try to pay other people the courtesy of being quiet when in the room and I think it fair to expect the same in return even though I am not a top rated player. I would like this noted on the tournament record.
As for item 1 it probably would have been best to postpone the game to when I was not distracted by other things.”
The reply from the DOP:
”I agree that all players need to be respected with regards to playing conditions. If you feel that there is too much noise you should caution the offending individual(s) - or refer the matter to me.
I usually try to start my game at 8.40pm so that I don't have people coming up to me and annoying me during my game.”
