Five games were played tonight over the board. Harvey didn’t show up, so his game was awarded to Luthien without a move being made.
Brian achieved two from two!! He gave away a whole rook, but Stuart W still found the moves that would elude most of us to lose the unlosable.
George won in a game that should have ended as a draw when Stuart H had the option of knight for two pawns to force the draw. Unfortunately Stuart ran out of time, and his plea for a draw with four seconds remaining could not be upheld as George still had winning chances. The game proceeded and George duly found the winning moves.
Andrew found a combination that won a piece as the endgame was approaching, after which John ensured his own downfall with timid play while queens were still on the board. Debbie had two rooks and several pawns versus a rook and pawn but gave away a silly stalemate by touching a rook that she would better have left well alone! She said something to the effect that she will never, never, never, ever, ever do that again.
Marty pushed Ross but his position crumbled in the end thus avoiding a final five minute flurry.
In non-tournament news, the club saw the return of Joe Tarnawski who dropped in for a night of chess. He played Ray Adams in a long game – Ray gleefully claimed a draw on repitition when he had the chance. After this he played Andrew, then George at lightning before being last out the door just after midnight. Joe is slowing down a bit from his younger days but still plays a steady game that can only be defeated with concentration – anything short of this and you face a massacre!

One Hour tournament 2004 results in detail
Quote of the night
“Can I recycle a previous quote of the night and make that the quote of the night?” – George, desperate for a tactic to beat James
“It’s just that James gets it all the time” – more whining from George
“Are you jealous of James” – Debbie (that shut George up!)
“I gave away a rook and won” – Brian after tonight’s game (with huge smile on face)
“I remember you used to be a good lightning player” – Joe Tarnawski after his first game with Andrew (after 5 games it was 3-2 to Joe)
“It was too easy” – Joe again, this time trying to make George feel better after the first game (George gave Joe a better run for his money after this)
