Tonight saw a five games played over the board.
Brian finally broke his duck by winning a game in which his opponent blundered a piece. Very novel! However, Brian still stated afterwards that he is considering putting forward a motion at the AGM banning queens. (Ed: There must be a good risque line here, but I’ll leave it to the reader to make up their own!).
In a game that could play a major part in determining the outcome of the tournament, Tony beat Andrew after taking control during the opening. However, the game that left neither player happy with Tony saying as much at the end. The way pieces were exchanged down was almost prosaic and Andrew seemed to be just playing for time without any consideration of trying to win on the board. The outcome is a useful win to Tony that throws the tournament wide open.
James got himself worked up into a mess before the game as shown by his pre-match email that almost reads like haiku:
“Will Millsy have too much talent and be the Idol tonight
or will his opponent do a Greece and hang in to the last minute.
I have a special Bobby Fischer move planned tonite.”
Unfortunately ‘Millsy’ did not appear, so James received a win on forfeit as Ross had not advised James that he was not showing up. This means that James is likely to avoid winning the wooden spoon, a feat he has achieved in every One Hour tournament between 2000 to 2003.

Stuart Holt got himself involved in time trouble again but managed to snared a draw with 12 seconds left on the clock and Luthien having no chance of promoting her lone rook file pawn. An actual stalemate on the board occurred in the game between John and Marty as a careless move in time trouble cost John certain victory with two pawns to nil in the final position. Debbie accounted for Stuart Wilson in a game that was closer than expected but which finally turned when Stuart touched the wrong piece (yes Brian, it was a queen!) and resigned instantly.

One Hour tournament 2004 results in detail
Quote of the night
“That’s a bad game to lose on forfeit because you only have to show up to beat James…… oh, unless your name is John Curran!” – Andrew
“If chess is a battle of wits I only came half prepared” – Debbie
“… are the girls my age …” – Peter in earnest conversation with James
“Stuart did something tonight that freaked me right out” – Debbie, not commenting on a fly at half mast, but rather on Stuart’s f4 variation in the Colle.
“I don’t think of Tony Howes as having form. Doesn’t he just come along and play?” – Andrew responding to allegations that Tony had regained his form with tonight’s win.
