A night of upsets and wins for white!
In the lead-up, James gave his usual headlines to attract the crowds:
Debbie Jenkins v James Hiller
Will the teacher teach the student a good lesson or will
the student have a few tricks up his sleeve????
A Robinson v H Quaresmini
Clash of the titans!!!! Who will prevail
M Chadwick v S Wilson
Will the young technician prevail over Stuarts attack strategy?
(as told to me last week by Debbie)
L Russell v G Flitcroft-Smith
Will the protege continue her march to the Maiden Trophy
or will the gambler have too much experience.
Andrew also came up with 3 very unprophetic quotes for the other games (which show why he is not a gambler!):
Dr T Howes v P Hiller: "Peter set to get his medicine?"
R Mills v S Holt: "Mills winning run comes to a Holt"
J Curran v B Willcock: "Will Curran be out of his league again?"
And so, to the action….
There were also several games completed in under 20 moves. Stuart Holt fell into a trap in the French Defence in which his queen grabbed two pawns, but a few moves later was forced at move 18 to concede a queen or resign. He chose the latter option. James fell into an opening trap of his own making at move 2 (1 e4 e5, 2 Nf3 f6, 3 Nxe5 fex5, 4 Qh5+ g6, 5 Qxe5+ etc etc) which led to a rapid and ‘ruthless’ annihilation by Debbie ‘Desert Fox’ Jenkins in 19 moves. Brian ‘blew his bishop’ and this is all we know of the game as he left soon after performing this disgraceful act. However, in whatever circumstances, a good win to John after his first round disaster.
Peter upset Tony in a closely fought game which turned on a miscalculation by Tony. Stuart Wilson was 4 pieces up (R+B+B+N v nothing) but allowed his flag to fall, much to the annoyance of onlookers who said that remembering to hit his clock and/or claiming at least a draw in the last two minutes would have been closer to justice. Marty felt a bit bad about it but the Ruthless Desert Fox advised him that a win is a win and not to think twice about it.
In the clashes between the undefeated players Andrew absorbed a lot of pressure from Harvey (who could have forced a draw at one stage) to take the advantage, while George just was not able to find that vital winning move in a game that ended in a time scramble. And so another good result for Luthien.
