James decided that last week’s Muhammed Ali promotion of his game was worth repeating. Hence the DOP received the following email during the day on Friday:

Hi Andrew

In regard to my match tonite against Peter

… BIG BROTHER IV

… ITS MATE V MATE

… STATE V STATE

… BROTHER V BROTHER

… Who will triumph in the battle of the brothers

… "It will be a thrilla at the Gap tonite when I

… get the dough against the Bro"

James

Harvey phoned to advise that he would not be making it tonight. He also offered the following correction to last week’s news column in which it was stated “After the game James was dispensing his chess wisdom most liberally (small ‘l’) with unsolicited in-depth analysis (all of it wrong, but who cares tonight?).

Harvey said that James had said Peter could have gained a stalemate in his game last week. Harvey laughed this off saying it was impossible. Further reflection during the week made Harvey realise that if Peter had swapped off correctly then Harvey would have been left with a rook file pawn that could not be promoted – therefore a stalemate. Therefore, this column unreservedly apologises for willfully slandering the reputation of James Hiller as a chess player.

Marty had the painstaking job of trying to reconstruct a Hiller-Hiller game from the scoresheets. His verdict: “The Hiller game as usual was a battle to decipher, but it appears as though James gave up a bishop at a time when he was looking to go 2 pawns + the exchange up!!”

In his own game, Marty had a good position with a pawn advantage against George until losing some vital initiative in the final stages as the clocks were winding down.

Luthien reached an endgame in which she had 2xR+2xP v R+B+1xP. Then Brian had what he called a bout of ‘astigmatism’ and moved his rook to a position adjacent to his opponent’s king giving check. Unfortunately the bishop was on a totally different diagonal, the rook was unprotected, the resignation was immediate. Brian suggested that his form is so bad that he may be seeking tips from James on how to beat John Curran next week.

Stuart Wilson lost to Ross Mills by the usual means of getting into the middle game and allowing his clock fall without resorting to any haste to complete his moves. Debbie and John played their Round Five game as both of their opponents advised of their non-appearance.

The most dramatic game of the night was the game between Stuart Holt and Andrew Robinson. The opening followed similar lines to that of their Round Seven Flood Cup match and was fairly even until Andrew made a blunder at move 32 which allowed Stuart to grab control of the vital ‘d’ file with his rooks. From then on it was grim defence for Andrew and another mistake at move 40 (Bc5 was better than Bb4 as it covered the d4 square) allowed Stuart a pawn advantage. However, by now Stuart was down to 6 minutes and Andrew to 9 minutes. George came along and recorded most of the moves in the final time scramble, occasionally ooh-ing and aah-ing as moves were missed and the tension rose. With 30 seconds left Andrew offered a draw which was rejected. Stuart pressed on and queened a pawn with seconds to go and was a move away from mate when his flag fell (Andrew had only 2 seconds left on his own clock). The injustice of chess!

The games Quaresmini-Jenkins and Howes-Curran have been postponed to a future date yet to be fixed.

George suggested that everyone come up with a billing for their game, as has been done by James, to enliven upcoming fixture. It’s up to you!
