After this week’s round there are only two players in the running for the Flood Cup with Andrew needing a win against Stuart (or Debbie to beat George!) to win the tournament for a fourth time. The Handicap is more complicated (see table below) with seven players still in contention going into the final round.

In tonight’s games, starting from board one, Andrew managed to beat Stefan in a game that Andrew gained the initiative in after the centre was opened up and he could take advantage of Stefan’s uncastled king position. Later in the game Stefan verbally analysed the game indicating how he could have won if he’d made the right moves (after this was repeated over the board Andrew pointed out that his analysis was unsound). Andrew thought a resignation was imminent but this was not to be, and Stefan battled on until it was time to catch his bus, even re-playing a move in his zeal to see it out to the bitter end.

George gained a piece against Ray and saw home his advantage, After the game Ray conceded that George seemed to be sharper and had a deeper understanding of the position. Brian’s game with Debbie can best be summarised in Brian’s quote below in Quote of the night.

Stuart Holt made some last ditch moves to save a precarious situation against Tony and then came up with a lethal double check that Tony had overlooked which led to mate in two in the corner.

Peter Hiller failed to appear and has been ejected from the tournament as per the rules which state that this is to be the case for players who forfeit two consecutive rounds. Very disappointing!

Marty got the better of John after John started the game with the Colle Opening (Curran variation). Unfortunately the Curran Variation seemed to have little to recommend it with moves of the b and a pawns that lost momentum. Post-match analysis with Andrew indicated that 24.. Rc2 would have seen a much speedier decline in John’s fortunes. As it was, a long overdue win for Marty.

The Stuart - James match as usual defied description. The scoresheets were only legible for about the first half of the game, and finished at a stage where Stuart checked putting his queen en pris and James didn’t see this and moved his king. Enough said! (Although….. James does have more to say below in Quote of the night).

Quote of the night

“Our game was hard fought. Went to move 43. My queen was playing a lone hand like B Lara. Ask Stuart next week” – hand written note from James, who left early but still wanted to be in the running for the night’s top quote.

“In the game tonight against Debbie I made a mistake in calculation, unlike the gift I gave Ray last week” – B Willcock

“I’m the most brilliant player here but I just made this error” – D Jenkins paraphrasing a standard quote from Mr X (alias Mr H)
