The clash between Andrew and George resulted in a marathon 249 minute game that finished with a resignation at 12:37am. George had the early initiative and was applying lots of pressure with Andrew often making the only plausible move left to defend his position. Then George overlooked Andrew’s move 26 of b4 which forced the capture of a piece (and the exclamation of “Oh sh*t!” from George). Still George had chances after he got his queen to d5 at move 29 with the double check threat to which Andrew still had to defend. Finally the position was simplified after queens were swapped at moves 38 and 39. All that was left was for Andrew to make possibly the worst move of his chess career at move 65 where instead of protecting his bishop with the knight and moveing Rc6 he moved Rb6 thereby offering George the choice of rook or bishop. For reasons unknown to himself George captured the bishop, thus avoiding a long bishop + knight checkmate.
In other games Debbie and Tony also had a long game which finished after midnight. Debbie sacrificed a piece for two kingside pawns and then tried to apply the pressure. The endgame was an interesting queen versus rook + 5 pawns which ended in a draw. Ray beat Brian quite easily after Brian gave him a gift early on while Marty was disappointed with his play against Stefan.
Further disappointment was that two games were awarded on forfeit when players failed to appear and did not consult their opponent or the DOP.
The Willcock Report:
“The only game I was paying attention to was mine. Given that I threw away a Bishop quite needlessly and unwittingly fairly early on there is little to engage any interest. Of course I could try making Stuart’s demand for money as I was taking a break from Ray’s 2 hour meditation on the position the shock that 1) led me to empty a spoonful of coffee on the cloth and 2) miss the fact that Ray’s move had the Bishop en pris. Elaborated and developed that would be the best I could do for you --still interested?”
