Report – 6 February 2004

Flood Cup preview

Sixteen players have entered the 2004 edition of the Flood Cup. This will be the first time that the new time controls are used. Digital Game Timers (DGTs) will be needed to measure the 80 minutes plus one minute per move (from move 1).

Last year’s winner Eric Faccer will not be defending his title, but the next three placegetters in 2003 will form the top three seeds in 2004: Tony Howes, Andrew Robinson and George Flitcroft-Smith. The fourth seed will be Harvey Quaresmini who won the 2003 Hour tournament in fine fashion. Andrew will be looking for a record equalling fourth title, while Harvey and George will be seeking their first Flood Cup since they tied for first way back in 1989. Outside the top four seeds only Ray Adams has achieved a top three finish in the Flood Cup (second in 1984 and 1990), while Brian Willcock has twice come fourth (1985 and 2001).

Five players have entered who did not participate last year in the Flood Cup: Marty Chadwick, Steve Quick, Stuart Holt, Garvin Gray and Mark Wardle. Of these, none had previously entered the Flood Cup except Mark Wardle who played in three editions between 1984 and 1988.

The play-off for the Handicap Trophy will again be run in conjunction with the Flood Cup. Handicaps have been awarded based on a similar formula to that employed last year. For unrated players a provisional rating has been given for Handicapping purposes.

Quote of the night:

“…and then he stuck the bloke’s pipe up his bulldog’s arse” - the inveterate Mike Talbot talking about how non-smoking policies are enforced in the bush (Ray Adams, his opponent, grimaced at this story)
