Tonight was memorable for James’ first win in this tournament since he beat Doug Foster two years ago. It was all above board – a dinky-di checkmate against new club member Stuart who showed his up and down form by pushing Andrew to the limit before succumbing on time in the first of their games.

George played four blitz games and no incidents were reported.

Lightning tournament 2004 results in detail

45 minute tournament

Group A has been decided with Andrew winning his final game against Debbie. Debbie was just looking to take the initiative with Andrew’s pieces becoming tied to the back rows and cramped when she made an error that dropped a piece. Brian won the other game played tonight to achieve the mid-table respectability that he craves.

Transfer

For the first time in many months transfer was played after 11pm. Stuart Holt was playing for the first time and quickly got the hang of it. He teamed up with George and won 3 games to the 4 won by the teaming of Andrew and P Hiller.

Quote of the night:

“I discovered today that I am descended from a Lettice” - Brian Willcock.

“I thought you were only interested in equestrian magazines” - John Guest discussing literary pursuits with George

“I did my sex education in pastoral care.” - James Hiller.
