* John 0 Stuart 1 – other game to be played

The 2004 year kicked off as is the tradition at The Gap CC with the lightning tournament. By mutual consent of the entrants it was decided that there will be 2 games played against each opponent (rather than 4). This is partly due to the overlap with the 45 minute tournament, and also the expected higher number of entries this year.

The tournament kicked off with Andrew against Debbie and by the end of the night 18 pairs of 2 games plus a single game had been played.

Two players new to the club entered and both seem strong players on first night results. Steve Quick was already known to the club from our interclub matches against Northside, while Stuart Holt was playing in his first tournament.

As usual the real news was in the George games. The main scene of contention occurred when John captured George’s king after George had made an illegal move. The problem was that John had not claimed the win as set out in the FIDE rules, but instead had proceeded to make an illegal move himself, albeit rook takes king (perfectly OK under decades of blitz chess etiquette). It was decided that in future king capture will result in loss of the game, however in this instance the game should be replayed as the players were not aware of this judgment. George graciously declined the opportunity for a replay and offered John a draw which was accepted.

Fortunately the DOP was on hand for the next skirmish. George was down to a pawn and knight, Harvey down to king only with his clock about to fall. Harvey captured George’s last pawn just as his clock fell and the game was a draw. George then won two games on illegal move (against Harvey and Peter), but correctly claimed.

Peter Hiller played above himself to claim wins against George and Harvey. Andrew also did well claiming ten wins from his first ten games. Debbie played four game, lost them all (but played OK), and then gave up ‘this silly game’ (ie blitz) for the night.

45 minute tournament

Three games played with Harvey confirming equal first in Group B and Debbie staking her claim on Group A with a win over Brian.

Quote of the night:

“James only got back from New Zealand yesterday so he’s still suffering from a bit of jetlag.” - Peter Hiller passing on the worst excuse his brother has so far come up with for non-attendance at chess.

“We did things without her” - Peter saying about what he and James got up to in NZ (referring to mama).

“James thinks his rating of 511 is pretty good because it’s better than Matt Hayden’s highest test score!” - Andrew

“You’ve just been a bit naughty.” - Debbie describing the latest of George’s series of lightning controversies.

“Shouldn’t they both lose?” - Marty giving his verdict on the George vs John king capture match.
