One Hour tournament

Round 13 games:

Gabriel Boross 0 Tony Howes 1

Harvey Quaresmini 1 James Hiller 0

Marty Chadwick 0 George Flitcroft-Smith 1

Debbie Jenkins 1 John Curran 0

Harvey won his final games against James to clinch the tournament. This would seem to be his greatest tournament victory, certainly at The Gap. For some reason Harvey held that an insignificant allegro tournament at Northside was a greater achievement, due to him being sixth seed in a field of 19, and winning every game.

Overall, Harvey’s win was very popular at the club, and long tiem coming for Harvey, who had not won a significant tournament outright at The Gap since 1989.

George suffered the rare fate at The Gap of going undefeated through a tournament but not winning, or at least sharing the glory. Only Eddie Ottschoffski in the 1997 Flood Cup and Luke Murray in the 2000 One Hour suffered a similar fate, but both of those tournaments were over 7 rounds, rather than 13.

Of course this year’s tournament was also notable for Debbie’s Maiden Trophy win, and James’ first tournament win, breaking a run of 44 games without victory.

From the DOP’s perspective of the tournament, the best aspect was everyone’s enthusiastic participation, which was reflected in the fact that only 3 games were forfeited (1 by James and 2 at the end by Mike), and the vast majority of games were played on the scheduled night. Well done all!

Marty writes: “Here's the notation from the game I played against George on 26/9. I had

lost concentration at moves 28 and 29. Just like in the game against Stuart,

where I gave up a queen at a similar stage in the game. Had about 17 minutes

left on the clock at that point so I didn't feel any time pressure. George

then defeated me with his stronger endgame skills.”

Quote of the night:

“None of ‘us’ won”

– Marty Chadwick commenting on the fact that no one in the bottom six won a game tonight. (Editor to BW – Changed ‘half’ to ‘six’ to save your money from hiring an incompetent lawyer)
