One Hour tournament

Round 9 games:

James Hiller 0 Tony Howes 1

Andrew Robinson ½ George Flitcroft-Smith ½

Gabriel Boross 1 John Curran 0

Peter Hiller 1 Mike Talbot 0

Harvey Quaresmini 1 Gavin Foulger 0

Marty Chadwick 0 Stuart Wilson 1

Debbie Jenkins 0 Brian Willcock 1

Several crucial games occurred tonight in a full round of matches. The top of the table clash saw a see-sawing game between Andrew and George, with George missing the only clearcut chance at winning, and Andrew managing to achieve a position where the queens were on the board and a draw by repitition was the eventual outcome.

Harvey won his game against Gavin and is now the overwhelming favourite to win the tournament. If Harvey win his remaining games against Mike Talbot, John Curran and James Hiller (a 95% likelihood), he will only require a draw against George to sew up the title.

The game most likely to be an upset was the hame between Gabby and John. Gabby threw away a piece while trying to play too fast. However in a situation where John had a rook and knight against a rook Gabby was able to apply pressure on the board and clock (and John applied pressure to himself!) to see Gabby queen a pawn and win the game.

By his loss, John threw away a good chance to gain valuable points on Debbie in the race to win the Maiden Trophy. Debbie lost a piece and then lost to Brian, leaving the Maiden still wide open. In other games Tony and Peter won quite comfortably, while Marty threw away a piece advantage, then a whole queen in the endgame to give Stuart his second victory of the tournament. It should be noted that Stuart did the gentlemanly thing and offered him the chance to take his move back, while Marty did the gentlemanly thing and resigned. Our club is certainly a club of honourable ladies and gentlemen (except Mike Talbot).
