The crucial matches in tonight's play involved Andrew and George. George started by steamrolling Gabby and Paul. Meanwhile Andrew ran into trouble in his first game against Peter. Needing to win these two games to clinch the tournament, he left a rook en pris in game one (© B Willcock) and then just failed to hang on in an endgame blemished by many illegal moves perpetrated by his opponent and a touch-move incident. Andrew blew a piece early on in the second game, but this time pulled back into the game with positional play to win. However the loss paved the way for George to repeat his Lightning tournament victory by beating Gabby, Paul et al to nil. This seemed likely until the final game of the night when a difficult queen ending against Peter saw George lose on time, and hence concede the tournament to Andrew.
