One Hour Tournament 2002

Results:

Brian Willcock 0 Peter Hiller 1 (Round 8)

Gabriel Boross 1 Michael Hussey 0 (Round 9)

Harvey Quaresmini 1 Stuart Wilson 0 (Round 9)

James Hiller 0 Doug Foster 1 (Round 9)

John Curran 0 Andrew Robinson 1 (Round 11)

The upset of the round saw Peter Hiller firm as favourite to win the Maiden Trophy section of this tournament with a win over Brian Willcock. An error of judgment in the exchanges of moves 16 to 19 saw Brian fall behind a piece. From this disaster he never recovered, finally delivering Peter the match in traditional fashion.

Gabriel managed to capitalise on an early piece advantage against Michael to win, although he had to withstand an all-out assault during the middle game. Stuart blundered a knight at move 22 which precipitated an early defeat through the resultant material and positional deficit.

James slowly but steadily lost material against Doug until the final checkmate on the back row. After the game the veteran Mr Foster gave young James a lecture on the advantages of remaining poker faced during a game of chess (example - don't grimace and sigh after you have just left a piece en pris!).

Andrew maintained a slight but firm advantage throughout the game against John, in terms of material, position, and on time. By the time John got into serious time trouble the game was all but over. However earlier on he may have benefited from less eagerness to exchange pieces when considering the resultant positional problems (example: move 8).

Other chess

No transfer again – the Hillers seemed keen, but their enthusiasm was not matched by non-believers such Messrs Willcock & Foster. Andrew focussed on a series of 10 minutes games with Gabby.
