The club’s regular scribe was unable to attend this Friday night (except for a fleeting appearance), so a report was filed by Mr Willcock himself concerning his pivotal game with Mr Flitcroft-Smith:
“George and I drew in about 55 moves - a forced draw of Bishop v King. Masterly and deep positional play by both. But of course I don't need to tell you that!”
After hearing of the sublime nature of the game, Mr Willcock was prompted to send a further dispatch:
“The highlight of the chess year was undoubtedly the long awaited game between George and Brian. The room hushed as George played as his first move Nf3, clearly the product of many hours of home preparation and designed to secure a psychological advantage. Brian resorted to his now notorious strategy of making his opponent over confident and made a number of moves that novices might have thought inferior. After gaining tempi and driving in Brian's centre, George prepared for what he doubtless thought the final stage by a vain attempt to copy his opponent's deviousness by doubling his pawns and denying himself castling. Scarcely had the applause died down when he made a positional sacrifice of the exchange. Brian countered by sac-ing a Bishop for two pawns and then going on to sacrifice the exchange by allowing a fork of his Rooks. While George was ahead in material he had the advantage of being well behind in time. Neither master could afford to be over confident. Tension mounted as each tried to eliminate dangerous pawns. Unable to bear the pressure any longer, Brian forced the exchange of Rooks, involving the loss of his pawn and reduced the game to the arcane endgame of K+B v. K. With the release of tension the onlookers showered the board with gold coins in appreciation of the brilliance of the fighting chess they had witnessed.”
