The first round of the One Hour Tournament (including a contest for the Maiden Trophy) was staged tonight. Following the late withdrawal of Paul Evans from the tournament there are now 11 entries. The tournament will consist of 11 rounds with a bye for one player each week (unless there is a very late entry!). At the chessboard, congratulation go to Michael Hussey for winning at his first attempt in a full-length rated tournament game.

Selected games from the One Hour tournament will be published each week.

One Hour tournament 2002 results in detail

Transfer

While Harvey Q and Ray Adams played a sedate game of standard chess, Andrew & Peter took on George & James at transfer - and everyone took on the cold!  Freezing weather tonight was the stand-out feature of tonight for everyone - except James who, as is his wont, attempted to discuss every sport known to man (except chess).  When he did finally accidentally diverge onto the subject of chess, James claimed to have been put in the ‘Group of Death’ in the One Hour (it is a round-robin!).  Anyway, over the board, James managed to drive George to ‘cussin’ ’ distraction, until they won a game (this achieved by changing the boards of opposition, when George achieved checkmate against Andrew).  Then everyone went home to watch the World Cup or study the form guides…
