Of the 3 games played tonight, the most exciting encounter was the Willcock-Wilson clash.  Brian won a piece early with some truly dreadful play from Stuart, and held this for most of the game.  But as the evening wore on he found he could not put Stuart away, as the black king avoided mating traps skipping merrily around the board.  Somehow Stuart managed to retrieve a piece by forking Brian’s K + R (post-scoresheet) and queened a pawn to set up mate.  Brian’s disgust with the scenario was amply displayed in the crumpled remains of a scoresheet he reluctantly pulled out of his pocket to hand the DOP after the game.

Brian Willcock (1320) - Stuart Wilson (1130)

1 e4 g6, 2 Bc4 Bg7, 3 d4 d6, 4 Nf3 Nf6, 5 Nc3 Nbd7, 6 Bg5 c5, 7 Qd3 Ng4, 8 Nd5 f6?, 9 h3 Nde5?, 10 dxe5 Nxe5, 11 Nxe5 fxg5, 12 Ng4 Bxb2, 13 Rb1 Bd4, 14 c3 Bg7, 15 0-0 Bxg4, 16 hxg4 Qc8, 17 Bb5+ Kd8, 18 Ne3 h5, 19 Bc4 hxg4, 20 Bd5 Rb8, 21 Qb5 b6, 22 Qc6 Qxc6, 23 Bxc6 Rc8, 24 Bd5 Bxc3, 25 Be6 Rb8, 26 Bxg4 Rh4, 27 g3 Rh7, 28 Nc4 Kc7, 29 Kg2 Bd4, 30 Rh1 Rf7, 31 f3 Bc3, 32 Rh6 Rf6, 33 Rh7 Re8, 34 Rbh1 Kd8, 35 Rh8 Ref8, 36 Rxf8 Rxf8, 37 Rh6 Rg8, 38 Be6 Rg7, 39 Rh8+ Kc7, 40 Ra8 Kb7, 41 Bd5+ Ka6, 42 a4 Bf6, 43 Rb8 e5?, 44 Nxd6 Ka5, 45 Rc8 Rb7, 46 Nc8 Kb4 etc etc  0-1

Position after move 46: White Kg2 Ra8 Bb5 Nc8 a4 e4 f3 g3; Black: Kb4 Rh7 Bf6 a7 b6 c5 e5 g5 g6.

The scoresheets were incomplete or eligible beyond this point, however it is known that white somehow contrived to allow black's c pawn to queen resulting in an eventual queen + rook mate in the corner.

Transfer

Transfer saw Andrew + Harvey vs George + Peter.  George’s team won the first 2 before losing 6 of the next 7 to go down 3-6.  Indeed the only game won by George and Peter after the initial flurry was one rather arbitrarily awarded by acting DOP Brian Willcock (there were issues surrounding the DGT also).
