Singer Cup 1990

The following report of the 1990 Singer Cup appeared in Queensland Chess (Vol 5 No 1 Mar 1991). The author of this report was Patrick Byrom.

Tournament report

Australian Postal Institute (API) and Redcliffe fought out the A Grade final of the 1990 Singer Cup. Redcliffe was heavily outrated on all boards, but their team had notched up recent upsets. However API made sure there were none in the final. Luke Berry added a touch of drama, avoiding a forfeit with only minutes to spare.

API also took out the B Grade final against German, who needed only a draw in the final to secure first prize after a strong showing in the lead-up round robin. They came close, missing out only through API captain Patrick Byrom exploiting time trouble to win a drawn ending.

The C Grade Major final went to BBC over Redcliffe. The underrated BBC needed only a draw but played well to win the match.

Griffith Uni scored an upset win over API in the C Grade Minor final, winning 3-1.
