Queensland Chess 1977 (includes Singer Cup)

 

There was no mention of the Singer Cup in the 1977 editions of Chess in Australia, however it is known from 1978 articles that Annerley Chess Club won the Singer Cup in 1977.

STATE LIGHTNING CHAMPIONSHIP 1976

The Queensland Lightning Championship (5 minutes per player) has been won by Ian Laurie, after a play-off with Joe Tarnawski.

Leading scorers:

Div A – I. Laurie, J. Tarnawski, I. Muller

Div B – G. Holliday, C. Belton, M. Stokes

Div C – T. Glazebrook, L. Morris, R. Bloodsworth.

 

The event was sponsored by Penfold wines.

 

BRISBANE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

Top scores:

I. Laurie 6½/8; C. Morris and B. Holliday 5½; A. Wilkes, A Kavetsky and F. Zamora 5; F. Huller 4½; G. Holliday, L/ Knight 4.

 

GERMAN CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

Leading Scorers:

S. Bogdanov 7/8; G. Stock, R. Vicic 6; I. Muller 5½; A. Breakwell 5; A. Pinter 4; E. Burn 3½.

 

TOOWOOMBA GAMBIT TOURNAMENT

Although only a small entry was attracted, the set opening variations produced a good variety of aggressive chess.

Top seed Juan Kloostra narrowly won the title on count-back from John Harris and David Stephson, with Victor Davidovici fourth.

Stephson, the current Toowoomba Champion, was the only player to go through the six rounds undefeated.
