INTER-CLUB COMPETITION – ALLEGRO & LIGHTNING
Five teams braved the rather inclement weather conditions to play in the allegro-lightning competition held on July 8th at the Institute of Technology, George Street, Brisbane.
The event was run as a double round robin, round one a 15 minute allegro, the second under lightning conditions, a change to the original format which proved popular with all contestants.
Toowoomba gained the lead at the halfway mark and managed to hold off strong challenges by the home team and The Gap.
Final Scores: Toowoomba 23½ (C. Laird 7½-½, C. Hollings 5-3; G. Bench 5-3; A. Thomas 6-2); Q.I.T 20; The Gap 19; Brisbane 12½; The Black Pawns 5.
K. Burnett and I. Laurie acted as joint directors of play. The prize giving took on a festive flavour,
with wine and chess sets being presented to winning teams and it is hoped the Institute are encouraged to hold a similar event next year.
C.A.Q. INTER-CLUB CORRESPONDENCE COMPETITION
Section A of the third C.A.Q. inter-club correspondence competition resulted in a win for Townsville 10½, ahead of Redcliffe and Toowoomba 8½; and Wynnum 7½.
In section B, Mt Gravatt won convincingly on 14½, with Toowoomba 5 and Townsville ½.
Section B in particular was marred by forfeits, players in several cases discontinuing games without adequate explanation.
BEST GAME PRIZE
The best played game prize from the first Gold Coast Open has been awarded to John Harris (Bundaberg) for his win against G. Dulovik, one of the three joint tournament winners.
John was the only player to meet all three ultimate winners (Myers, Dulovik and Laird) and his sharing of equal fourth only half a point from the top was very creditable.
