SINGER CUP INTER-CLUB COMPETITION
The Singer Cup results,
a match competition for teams in the Brisbane
district and others in the near vicinity,
including Redcliffe, Ipswich, Pine Rivers and Wynnum (Waterloo),
are now completed for 1971
Division A
The Gap 24½; Brisbane 18; Waterloo 12; Redcliffe 11; University 1 (who were forced to withdraw early in the piece)
By a shock victory over Brisbane in the final round, Waterloo avoided the wooden spoon, overtaking Redcliffe who crashed ½ – 3½ to The Gap.
The Gap were worthy winners, while Brisbane, the previous holders, did not maintain their form of last season.
Division B
Ipswich 26; Inala 25½; Q.I.T. 24½; Pine Rivers 16; Brisbane ‘B’ 14½; Windsor Y.M.C.A. 13½.
Although only scoring 5½ points in the last four rounds, Ipswich earned promotion, holding off a close challenge by Inala and Q.I.T.
Division C
Brisbane ‘C’ 25½; Windsor ‘B’ 21; The Gap ‘B’ 20½; Camp Hill-Carina 20; B.P.C.C. ‘B’ 14
TOOWOOMBA and IPSWICH CHESS CLUBS
The Toowoomba Club championship was won by Allan Thomas and the Ipswich title by D.G. Lotz.
GOLD COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Gold Coast Championship, 8 rounds attracted 20 entrants from Southport, Surfers Paradise and Coolangatta Clubs.
A tie resulted for top place, with L. Whitehead and D. Woodward on 7 points each and a play-off for the title will take place shortly.
A. Kells 5½ came third and J. Myers, R. Callihan and H. Christman each scored 5 points.
It says much for the strength of this inaugural event that the Queensland Champion J. Myers came fourth.
An inter-club Allegro Tournament, sponsored by Penfolds Wines, will be held at Brisbane Club on Nov 28.
The four finalists will receive a chess set and a bottle of Penfolds champagne.
