Queensland Chess 1966
Chess in Australia commenced publication this year.
There was no mention of The Gap Chess Club in the 1966 to 1968 editions of Chess in Australia.
However, as there were also no articles on the Singer Cup, it is still quite possible that The Gap Chess Club existed at this time.
The following articles appeared in Chess in Australia (October 1966, page 16-17).
REDCLIFFE CHESS CLUB
Redcliffe Club has commenced its championship with 13 entrants.
The first round produced some surprises when young Paul Wyeth defeated N. Athousis in a fast moving game and A. Gemmell defeated H. Denschell.

BRISBANE CHESS CLUB
Brisbane has just started the annual club championship.
Max Salm is the present champion and he will meet lively opposition in defending his title.
The following articles appeared in Chess in Australia (November 1966, page 12).
BRISBANE CHESS CLUB
The commodious room used as the headquarters of the Brisbane Chess Club at State Service House, 59 Elizabeth Street, has now been air-conditioned.
At the end of the fifth round in the club championship the scores stood as follows:
M. Salm and R. Burns 4; A. Vilums and A. Rideout, who have an adjourned game 3½; J. Tarnawski, L. Grigore and J. Myers 3; I. Gillies, M Dyson and T. Simpson 2½;
J. Jones, C. Jackson, W. Dower and Mrs B. Jones 2; K. Holland 1½; J. Hardy and D. Grabham 1.
The holder Max Salm plays R. Burns in the next round and Vilums should beat Rideout in their adjourned game. The event is an eight round Swiss.
CHESS IN PRISON
About two years ago some Brisbane players went to Brisbane Prison for a match, at the request of the Welfare Officer.
They met some good players and the event was conducted in an impeccable manner.
Play took place in the morning and in the Officers’ Mess in the afternoon.
Some beautiful boards, made in the prison, were used and the friendly atmosphere and spirited games made the visit very enjoyable.
Since then Redcliffe have joined Brisbane players in making the visit a feature every month or so.
The following articles appeared in Chess in Australia (December 1969, page 10).
BRISBANE CHESS CLUB
The Brisbane Club Championship, an eight round Swiss, was won by R.C. Burns, with a clear lead of 1½ points. His only loss was to A. Vilums.
M. Dyson made a moderate start, but then won his next four games and secured second place.
J. Tarnawski shared third place with L. Grigore.
Burns’ play was consistent throughout, although he was perhaps fortunate in one of his games. As it happened he could have lost that and still kept the lead.
Max Salm did not show his usual form and being unable to appear at the final round have Grigore a point by default.
The greatest upset occurred in the seventh round when Dyson defeated Salm in a game that went to 54 moves, and Simpson defeated Vilums.
Full results:
R.C.Burns 7; M. Dyson 5½; J. Tarnawski and L. Grigore 5; A. Vilums, I. Gillies, T. Simpson and J. Myers 4½; M. Salm and A. Rideout 4;
J. Jones, K. Holland and Mrs B. Jones 3½; D. Grabham and W. Dower 3; C. Jackson 2; J. Hardy 1.
