The club’s most prestigious tournament, the Flood Cup, has commenced and the upsets began in round one. Paul Evans has entered the tournament often, but never managed to reach his full potential. This time though, he has started well by defeating 2nd seed George Flitcroft-Smith in Round 1 with his English Opening. In other games, veteran Brian Willcock’s maverick style was not enough to overcome Harvey Quaresmini (moves 23 & 24 were his undoing), and Peter Hiller managed to survive an early onslaught from Stuart Wilson’s over advanced queen. James Hiller’s drought continued against Doug Foster.

Two games were played over the board. Paul managed to win a close encounter with Gabby after restricting his space. Gabby said he could have accepted an exchange of queens offered and achieved a draw, however he played for the win, despite being a pawn down, and came unstuck. This matchscore should be available some time this week.
However, it was the other game that caught the imagination. George said he had never played a game like it. White managed to queen a pawn on c8 as early as move 12, and with no compensation to black! (Surely a Flood Cup record!!) Then , in a situation reminiscent of the late night transfer scene, George proceeded to deliver 13 consecutive checks between moves 11 and 23. Probably the only reason black wasn’t finished off by this sequence was that James made an unintentional ILLEGAL MOVE at move 24. As an independent observer this scribe can attest that what transpired was that black had first attempted the illegal Bb4+. White correctly pointed out that the bishop was pinned by the queen and then, noticing that James had descended into a NARCOLEPTIC SEIZURE, left the board for a while to recover his nerve from the tense situation. This scribe did likewise thinking that there was no way of stopping black being smashed open by Qxd6+. How surprised he therefore was to note the game continuing a few moves later with black’s house holding together on d6. After the game had concluded, the analysis team got to work and found that James had moved his knight diagonally two squares from h5 to f7. The FIDE Laws of Chess state that if an irregularity is found during the game then the game must be brought back to the situation prior to the irregularity. The error was not spotted during the game, but after completion, and therefore the result stood.

Tonight’s games featured three close encounters, while Paul Evans stormed on to continue his unbeaten run in the other game. Andrew and Gabby repeated the result their final round game last year that decided the Flood Cup in Andrew’s favour. George managed to grab the initiative in a kingside assault against Harvey. Doug managed to win by achieving the opposition in a pawn endgame that Brian seemed to be dominating earlier on (perhaps queenside castling was a mistake in this instance?).

Two games were played tonight. Gabby defeated Brian earlier in the night after a bishop sac at move 22 that went awry. In the other game, Doug seemed to have the initiative with a well placed rook and could certainly have forced a draw after move 29. Then a mistake by black at move 37 let Andrew back into a game that took over 3 hours to complete.

Paul Evans unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of giant killer Doug Foster. According to Paul, he spent 20+ minutes on a move, came up with a combination, and then (as so often happens) played the wrong move. Hence, instead of being 2 pawns up, he was a piece down! A pawn endgame developed after pieces were forced to be exchanged with white having an extra bishop due to black's fateful move 19.
Andrew, seeking to be the first to retain the Flood Cup since the ‘Great Joe’ (1995-1996), beat George in the showdown between the top two seeds in the tournament. The game lasted 249 minutes (finishing at 12.26am) making it the longest game of the 2002 Flood Cup so far. George had Andrew pinned down early on in an f4 Sicilian with a knight on e4 and black still to castle. By move 11 white’s kingside pawns were on f4 g5 h4. However the storm was weathered by black and after castling, then exchanging some pieces, black had a strong rook on the f-file with much counterplay that threatened to open white up altogether. White finally removed his king from immediate danger, but at the expense of continuing with a 2 pawn deficit. Black gave up a pawn at move 34 to exchange off a rook, and then effectively won the game by virtue of a passed pawn on the g-file.
Harvey knocked over Stuart in time to face him again in the 45 minute tournament.

On a night when tragedy struck - the urn broke down and there was no tea or coffee - 3 Flood Cup games were played. Perhaps the most amazing of these was the battle for the wooden cutlery between James and Stuart. James thought he had missed an opportunity to score a whole rook advantage after a gross blunder by Stuart (16..Rd2), when a backward bishop could have captured. Playing through the game later, it was revealed that he could have captured the rook with his other bishop the following move!
Andrew managed to obtain a huge positional advantage as early as move 11 against Peter Hiller, with a well posted bishop on d6. After that, the game ran itself for white with a flurry of forced exchanges down the queenside obtaining a pawn advantage. At move 27 white skewered black’s rook and knight, and although Peter overlooked a better continuation the result was sealed at this juncture.
George said after his game that, following last week’s effort, he had decided to curb his natural instinct to attack and try to win in 12 moves. This paid dividends with a controlled performance against Gabriel Boross.

The Hillers put up strong performances tonight, and while both lost they can gain some joy from their play. Gabby managed to obtain a pawn advantage early on and was able to shield this through to the endgame where it proved decisive. Of the 3 games played tonight, the most exciting encounter was the Willcock-Wilson clash. Brian won a piece early with some truly dreadful play from Stuart, and held this for most of the game. But as the evening wore on he found he could not put Stuart away, as the black king avoided mating traps skipping merrily around the board. Somehow Stuart managed to retrieve a piece by forking Brian’s K + R (post-scoresheet) and queened a pawn to set up mate. Brian’s disgust with the scenario was amply displayed in the crumpled remains of a scoresheet he reluctantly pulled out of his pocket to hand the DOP after the game.

Congratulations go to Peter Hiller who managed his first major trophy win of his career in snaring the Handicap Trophy. His game with Doug Foster amounted to a play-off for the Handicap, with a draw being good enough for Doug. And indeed the game appeared headed for a draw in a rook & pawn endgame, until Doug somehow contrived to be mated on the side of the board (perhaps 3 question marks are warranted against his 46th move!!). Nevertheless, plaudit goes to Peter on the night. Gabby managed to beat James, an occurrence precipitated by James’ rash move 7.

Paul Evans managed to lose a queen for a rook and this hastened his demise against Harvey after an early promising position. Meanwhile on the other board Brian had built up a considerable positional advantage which more than compensated for the pawn material advantage held by Andrew, who had been restricted by his own pawns all game. Then at move 25 Brian offered a draw as a ‘psychological ploy’. Possibly to his astonishment, Andrew noted Paul’s predicament (he was just about to fall on his sword) and George’s inexplicable absence for the past 2 weeks (hence the forfeit), and agreed to Brian’s offer. Brian then ventured how he would have continued had the draw not been accepted, and Andrew regretted his decision somewhat!
