Report from the Director of Play

29 October 2005

This year’s tournament programme has again been successful with all tournaments, in particular our rated tournaments, attracting a good level of participation. This is reflected in Table 1 below which compares tournament participation rates over recent years.

It was also good to see a record number of 13 players qualified for a position in the final standings for the Best All-Round Trophy.

Tournaments commenced and were completed close to schedule. The Flood Cup and One Hour tournaments were submitted for rating with the Australian Chess Federation (ACF) so most players who competed in these tournaments will have an official ACF rating in the December 2005 list.

Major tournaments conducted during 2005 include the following:

In addition to these I was organiser and arbiter for three other regular tournaments (The 45 Minute; the Prize Night, and the St David’s Day tournament). These are the more relaxed of our tournaments, with the aim to make participation fun and enjoyable.

The club again played Samford Valley CC and Northside CC in home and away fixtures during the past 12 months. All nights were successful and with six players making the winter’s drive to represent The Gap at Samford, a good improvement in participation on last year. These nights have been successful, and have been a forum in which players can play serious games without having to be concerned about loss of rating points and tournament standing.

The main rule change at the 2004 AGM was the use of 10 second increments in the One Hour Tournament. Players adjusted well after they came to understand that the ten second increment was significantly shorter than the one minute increment used in the Flood Cup. There were no incidents arising from the new time control, nor major complaints about it, and therefore it can be judged as a success.

In 2006 I foresee a similar programme to this year, and welcome any suggestions as to how the programme can be improved. The 2005 prize night is scheduled for Friday 27 January 2006.

Thanks to all club members for making 2005 a successful year for the club.
