As there were only ten entries the tournament was run as a round-robin rather than in a format with a group stage and finals

The final points table only is documented as this was recorded in an article which appeared in the February 2000 edition of The Western Echo. The article went as follows:

“The Gap Chess Club has commenced the New year with its traditional Prize Night Lightning Competition. On a sweltering January night Nathan Davidson won with a string of victories before suffering a draw and a loss in the last two rounds. President Mark Winn had to withdraw from the last two rounds due to heat exhaustion! Final Results: Nathan Davidson 7.5; Sam Constantin 6; Andrew Robinson, Harvey Quaresmini 5.5; Brian Thomas, Luke Murray 4.5; David Mills 4; Mark Winn 3.5; Richard Hixon 3; Dusan Smrek 1.”

To this article can be added that David Mills, who won the 1998 edition of this tournament in controversial fashion, lost his first four games straight while defending his title before recovering to finish on 4 from 9. Nathan Davidson had never come close to winning a lightning tournament at the club, but won this one, his final tournament at the club, to finish in fine style.
