St David’s Day Tournament
Martin Laizans
became the 14th winner of the St David’s Day Tournament in its 15th
edition.
Only Brian Willcock
has won more than once, fitting since he provided the inspiration for the
tournament to start back in 2004.

Three players won seven of their nine
games in a ten player round-robin, but the handicap system allowed Martin a
clear margin of victory.
Martin only lost twice, to Andrew and
Tony who were the two other players to win seven.
Behind Martin, the next six finished
within half a point of each other, validating the complicated method of
handicap calculations by the tournament director.
Metin provided
refreshments again and also put up a solid showing in the tournament.
Returning
overseas the next day, the club wished him well on his journey.
Metin’s friend
The club
welcomed Chesley Cutler on his first night.
His winning
chances improved as he became accustomed to the Bronstein blitz time controls
(3min+3sec) and he should provide stern competition in the slower time control
tournaments following this one.
On a Teams
Basis, the Non-Welsh had a slight edge over the Welsh in the final count.
