Interclub Match vs Bullwinkle Chess Club

The following report from the Bullwinkle Chess Club posted to their FB page the next day perfectly summed up tonight’s interclub action.

Four of Club Bullwinkle’s most-capped players rolled up to The Gap Chess Club last night, fully prepared to assert (if not prove) that rust-coated experience trumps youth and good form.

Andrew Mather, leading The Gap, proposed a format change from one long game to a Scheveningen system all-play-all allegro showdown.

Unwilling to admit to the fear engendered by the reduced thinking time, Bullwinkle acquiesced. De facto captain Nik Stawski then set about bungling the pairings - a clever ruse that ultimately resulted in the jettisoning of one round.

Capitalising on this, Bullwinkle was able to fend off The Gap and nose ahead, yet end the contest before allowing a comeback:

R1: 2.0 - 2.0
R2: 2.5 - 1.5
R4: 3.0 - 1.0

[Yes, it was round three that didn’t make the cut. Pure strategy.]

Andrew Mather top scored with 3/3 for The Gap, a truncated picket fence that in all likelihood would have stretched to 4/4 had the contest continued. Tony, Josh and Adam Morris gave him good support, taking points off (much) higher-rated opposition.

For the first time in over 20 years since the opening’s conceptualisation, Jacob Edwards was given the opportunity to play the Bullwinkle Gambit, the key moves of which (it turned out) he’d long-forgotten. This aside, no key milestones were reached.

Somewhere amidst it all, the Cowboys took down the Broncos. Which match will be remembered longest remains to be seen.

Many thanks to The Gap for hosting………. Full match results can be found at: http://www.clubbullwinkle.com/ (and are also reproduced below)

And a reminder that the Marcus Porter Memorial is coming up on Friday(s) 21st and 28th October. Marcus was in everyone’s thoughts last night, having often played for The Gap and having always brought his inimitable style to matches against Bullwinkle.
