Stuart Wilson Trophy

Round 4 results:

Ray Adams 0 Andrew Mather 1

Andrew Robinson 1 Martin Laizans 0

Tony Morris 1 Edwin Mejia Ortiz 0

Daniel Clancy 1 Adam Morris 0

Peter Hiller v Daniel Sheldon – postponed to July 8

Nick Petrie v Brian Willcock – postponed to July 8

John Ryland 1 James Hiller 0 (on forfeit)

Tony Howes – half point BYE

Four games were played, and another decided on forfeit.

Andrew Mather won fairly convincingly to move further ahead of the rest of the field, and will be hard to catch.

In other game, Martin was slightly ahead for much of the game, and seemed on course for a win until he trapped his only queen with a one move blunder.

Edwin again featured in the last game to finish, with Tony showing the power of connected passed pawns.

Tony had a rook and 6 pawns against a rook, a bishop and 2 pawns, and was always headed for victory from this position.

Earlier he had sacrificed a piece for two pawns to avoid a draw on repetition, but it probably Edwin’s failure to recapture a pawn on Move 40 that sealed the fate of the game.

Daniel Clancy claimed his third win of the tournament to join the chasing pack behind Andrew Mather, while John claimed a point from James who was a ‘no show’.
