Often the first rounds will end with wins to the top half of the draw, with the results a mere formality.

This was not the case tonight, with three of the six matches decided over the board providing upsets.

Joe Curtain had Tony Howes in all sorts of trouble, and it seemed Joe would press for a win after a terrible opening from Tony.

The game evened and the position was retrieved by Tony who gained a fortunate draw.

Joshua resigned at Move 19, when some of the other games were just commencing.

After a disastrous Move 8 from Black, Brian was a queen up and the contest was effectively over as Joshua conceded more material.

Cameron and Gary seemed heading for a draw as the clock approached 11:00pm.

The alarms were extended and instead of Cameron extracting a slender win, it was Gary Sands who found a way to win.

Other games were won by Ray Adams, Martin Laizans and Tony Morris.

Peter Hiller and James Hiller notified their absence after the draw had issued, and consequently forfeited their matches.
