Perhaps the most crucial game of the night resulted in a defeat for the reigning Flood Cup champion, and a great opportunity for Marcus to win the tournament.

The game seemed to be played at a leisurely pace, and especially Marcus, who arrived late for the game from work, then used very little of his time, and seemed to be only half-serious in his attitude.

However this may have been a clever ploy to disarm Andrew, because Marcus developed a lethal attack with his two rooks and a knight to conjure a mating trap which Andrew’s less well positioned pieces were unable to defend against. This game also put to an end Andrew’s run of 14 consecutive wins, his last loss also against Marcus, in last year’s Flood Cup.

Tony played an original opening he discovered during his lunch break today, hoping it would precipitate an earlier finish to his game.

Alas, this was not to be, and the game became one of Tony’s well positioned pieces looking for an opening against desperate defence.

Two hours into the game, each player had lost just two pawns, black had two knight on the fourth rank and all other pieces on the back rank.

A snatched pawn breathed some life into black’s game, and there were just enough counter-attacking possibilities to thwart white’s attack from becoming decisive.

A draw was agreed at 11:20pm, with black a pawn up, but white with central connected passed pawns on the fifth and sixth rank (but difficult to progress).

Sanat won his game early on against Russell, to move into the top half of the table.

A pleasing aspect of tonight was the number of players who came to chess and did not have tournament play.

The club welcomed Samuel Hunt, a noted chess coach and promoter, who has done much to popularise chess in West Kentucky, USA.

We also saw Joe Curtain at the club, who as well as playing blitz chess took a keen interest in the top of the table between his friends Andrew and Marcus.

Ray returned to the club after an absence of a month on a South Sea cruise, and being an aficionado of the longer form of the game stayed to the end just before midnight, keenly following the Howes-Robinson clash.

In addition, Tony Joshua and Adam Morris came and played various form of social chess, as did Brian and Metin.
