The largest Flood Cup field since 2006 commenced play tonight, and it was a fortunate night to have the white pieces, with six of the eight games being won by white.

The original First Round draw was based on Dec 2014 ACF ratings, the March 2015 list not available at the time.

It originally contained 14 players, with two late entries subsequently being accepted – Stefan Flanigan and Russell Lyons who played each other tonight.

In addition, Peter Hiller entered the Flood Cup tonight, and with an even number of players already entered for Round One, he was allowed to commence the tournament in Round Two.

This year’s Flood Cup marks the first time ever that five players have a rating over 1600 at the start of the tournament.

In addition, four previous Flood Cup champions are in the field, the defending champion Andrew Mather, plus Tony Howes, Andrew Robinson and Cameron De Vere.

Tonight saw three of the four past champions win, with the four games they were involved in finishing later than the other four games.

The first game to finish was also one of the last to start, with Martin Laizans slightly held up in arriving at the venue, but beating the 30 minute forfeit time.

Perhaps Martin was distracted, because he lasted just 13 moves before losing a queen for a bishop and resigning to Metin Ozaslan.

This performance by Martin was just two moves more than his effort in last year’s first round against Andrew Mather.

Metin had not played a long game of tournament chess for about 25 years, and could hardly believe his good fortune!

Marcus Porter, Tony Morris and Russell Lyons also had good wins to start their tournaments well against less experienced opponents, all of whom were playing their first classical-length tournament game at the club.

Brian Willcock lost a piece early (following move ten) when he had a good attack that came unstuck, and was unable to find a way through after this despite continued attacking play.

Sanat Kunwar and Tony Howes both had a piece advantage by the end of their games, the final two games to finish at 11:00pm and 11:15pm respectively.
