Jim Petrie 0 James Hiller 1 – from Round 4

Peter Hiller 1 Brian Willcock 0 – from Round 8

Tonight saw a tussle for first place, and another to avoid last place, but most attention seemed to be focussed on the latter game.

Jim played methodically through about the first 15 moves and there was not much to split the players at this stage. But then Jim made a few errors that cost major material which James exploited to win his second consecutive game.

Marcus played an adventurous opening (the Dutch Defence) and soon had trouble defending an onslaught against his uncastled king. The game was as good as over when Marcus had to concede a rook to pressure and a marauding queen, but he did manage the unusual feat of his king reaching the sixth rank during the middle game with lots of pieces still on the board, albeit small consolation!

Peter managed a win against Brian, which maintained his place in the standings than James.
