On a good night for the White Pieces, the closest game was the game between John and James.

After the opening moves, James had a managed a pawn advantage in an otherwise static position, and thus had a small advantage.

Somehow James contrived to lose a rook, and these difficulties led his queen to fall with resignation soon following, just a minute before 9pm.

Tony Morris put up a good fight in his game, and reached an even endgame, although white was looking for ways to threaten and avoid a draw.

Then black snatched what looked like a poisoned pawn with his bishop, this not being tested as he made a fatal move that concede a rook while trying to recover the bishop.

This was the final game to conclude on the night.

Jim twice tried to castle out of check against Brian (but decided better of it), but the craziest move of this game went to Brian himself when he promoted a (white) pawn and placed a black queen on the board!

Martin’s game was over by 8:30pm after a sudden resignation, seemingly prompted by a disappointing blunder.
