Interclub Match vs Bullwinkle Chess Club
Bullwinkle again came away with a comprehensive scoreline, although this did not tell the whole story of the evening.
The Gap was please to have the services of ten players to call on, with Greg Colwell and Shane Mather kindly stepping aside to allow the others a game.
James Hiller also appeared, but slightly after the games had started.
After a bit of social mingling and catching up, and a few friendly blitz games, the game finally started at 8:25pm.
With only seven DGTs in working order, it was the Board Eight players who agreed to use an analogue clock and play with a flat one hour.
After the games were completed, Tyson revealed that he had inadvertently set the DGT in his game at a flat hour also, which may have had consequences if his opponent had made the right move at a crucial juncture.
The Gap’s sole win came to Marcus, who claimed victory on time in an even match in which his opponent let his time slip.
George had his chances, and several observers felt he had a winning chance at one stage, but this was let slip and he was a piece down at the end.
Michael Van Pelt finally atoned for his loss to Andrew Mather last November to achieve a satisfying victory, although both players came up with a respectable performance.
Andrew Robinson (who stepped in for Greg Colwell at the last minute) had a very cagey first 25 moves of so his game with Tyson Walker, who played an experimental opening. Tyson seemed to be well placed positionally, but Andrew had a chance to even things up and get queens off the board with a sharp discovered check – he analysed over the board and found it unsound, but later came to realise this analysis was unsound and the discovered check was the best option. Tyson was getting in time trouble at the end (especially without the ten second increment), but had a convincing win at the end.
Tony Zhong was well up at the end of his game, but in serious time trouble, regularly allowing his time to fall under ten seconds, sometimes getting to two or three seconds as if daring the flag to fall. However his position was dominant and he was able to clearly win at the end.
Regina and Michael D’Arcy both won their games to notch up further wins for Bullwinkle.
Tony Hughes made up for an upset loss to John Ryland last year, by grabbing a couple of pawns advantage early on, which saw him through to a win. At one point John could have forced a draw on repetition, however the idea to do this did not occur to him and he took his chances to play on.
