Stuart Wilson Trophy

Results:

George Flitcroft-Smith ½ Andrew Robinson ½ (Round 8)

Greg Colwell 1 Jim Petrie 0 (Round 8)

Ray Adams 0 Andrew Mather 1 (Round 10)

Greg won against Jim in an even game where Greg considered offering a draw at one point, but in the end won with a few pawns advantage in a rook endgame.

Andrew Mather won convincingly against Ray to maintain his chance of winning the tournament.

George and Andrew Robinson played a 76 move marathon, with George having the advantage throughout and a few sharp winning opportunities. Andrew’s position was so dire that he offered a draw at move 23, and this after escaping almost certain defeat the move before when George automatically recaptured and missed the opportunity to go a piece up. Andrew clawed his way into the game after George overlooked his rook being en pris on the diagonal, allowing Andrew to swap his queen for two rooks. Andrew’s two rooks were not allowed to co-ordinate due to George’s clever positional play which eventually won the exchange. However the endgame saw Andrew’s knight and rook perfectly positioned to protect all pawns and even gain a two pawn advantage. In the end George settled for a draw rather than push his king up and risk a knight and rook mating trap. George remarked that this was his third draw in a row, an unusual statistic for his style of play. The draw means Andrew can still win the tournament without a play-off with success against Ray next Friday.
