Stuart Wilson Trophy

Results:

Jim Petrie ½ Andrew Robinson ½ (from Round 1)

Tony Howes 1 Russell Lyons 0 (from Round 3)

Brian Willcock ½ Andrew Mather ½ (from Round 7)

There were two minor upset results tonight that should both have been major upsets.

Jim Petrie was able to manufacture exchanges down which led to a favourable rook and pawn endgame, and was perhaps hasty to accept his opponent’s offer of a draw, when all the winning chances were his.

Brian had several clear-cut chances to win, and was a lone bishop up in the final stages but somehow conjured a draw from a straightforward winning situation. However, Brian had played very well to this point, and had a fierce attack during the middle of the game that could have pulled off a brilliant win with the right combination.

Tony also won against Russell to move up the table.
