A full program tonight saw the crucial match in the Flood Cup decided with Tony overcoming Ray. Tony needs just a draw or better against John next Friday to win the Flood Cup for a second time.

In the virtually third place play-off George and Andrew fought each other to a draw just before midnight, with George missing winning chance at Move 17, after which Andrew fought back to not only reach parity, but to have a slight advantage at the end, albeit one that could not be pressed through to a win.

John lost to Jim in a game likely to decide seventh place. John also played Brian who gave the following account of their game:

John refused to pay the blackmail demanded so... .....

In our game he came out of the opening ahead and I was on the ropes. I launched a desperate Queen headed attack that began to pose serious problems as John's King had not been castled. John however managed to scramble protection around his piece.

I then decided to check with my Knight. My attack might be coming to an end but at least I could force the winning of the exchange.

Seeing no escape square for the King, John conceded the game. Guiltily I then showed John that his Rook could have taken the checking Knight.

We continued the game as a skittles one and I did manage to win. It salved my conscience somewhat, but doubtless John did not give the game the same concentration he would have devoted on a Flood Cup encounter. I have then decided to say one thousand Hail Tals in penance.
