Report – 15 February 2013

Lightning Tournament

The first major tournament kicked off tonight with the annual Lightning tournament which has been played over two nights since 2008.

Defending champion Marcus Porter lost to Andrew Mather in the first round, but the favourites avoided each other thereafter until Round 5, at which point there were three players with 100% records – George and the two Andrews.

After this, the 2011 champion Andrew Robinson was outclassed in his next three games and lost on both the board and the clock to George, Andrew M and Marcus respectively. Rounds 7 and 8 saw George stake his claim to be 2013 champion (he last won the tournament in 2002) by beating Andrew Mather and Marcus in consecutive rounds.

The contenders for the biggest upset of the night both involved Brian. He lost miserably to John Ryland after an successfully illegality was claimed by his opponent. But then Brian knocked off Martin, who had confided earlier that he is sometimes disturbed by the erratic unpredictability of Brian’s moves.

The stage is set for an interesting climax next week, with probably any of the top three in with a show of winning.

Jim has indicated he will not be available next Friday, so in this case his games will be forfeited to his opponents, however the games he played tonight will remain in the final calculations as he has completed 50% or more of his games.
