Stuart Wilson Trophy

Round 9 results:

Andrew Mather 1 John Ryland 0

Martin Laizans 0 Jim Petrie 1

Brian Willcock 1 James Hiller 0

Andrew Robinson ½ Greg Colwell ½

Tony Howes – BYE

The final round was played tonight, with Andrew Mather winning the Maiden Trophy.

This was achieved after Andrew won his final game against John (the last game of the night to finish), while Martin lost to Jim.

Martin had a drawn position against Jim, but with this not enough, Martin played on and blundered.

James again showed up rather late, but his game lasted just ten minutes and was over when he resigned to Brian at Move 18.

Andrew and Greg played an enterprising game, but one that had too many pawns blocking the board for either side to make headway.

Greg can claim third place if he wins his final postponed game next Friday against Brian.

Quote of the night

“If Prince Harry played ‘disrobing’ chess at our club, the result of the game would be decided over the board, and not be dependent on the state of undress” – Director of Play (in response to many queries on the technical aspects of the game from James)
