Four games were played tonight. Ray and Ryan also played with Ray providing instructional chess advice.

Tony won again, with James making it to the endgame but then blundering a rook. Jim also won his game with John.

Greg and Andrew played a tight even game with few chances. Thinking he would be a pawn down, Greg offered a draw which was rejected. Realising a move later than the pawn was poison, Andrew offered a draw which was accepted. At this stage the players had a bishop and knight each with en even six or seven pawns.

Andrew took the risk of stationing his queen on the central d4 aquare at move 11, which resulted on a lot of pressure on Martin’s position. Martin defended precisely and extricated himself so well, that he obtained an advantage. After the queens were exchanged, Martin’s pieces were bearing down on white’s isolated c5 pawn. The pressure on this pawn commenced at move 22 .. Rc8, and the pawn was only captured at move 43. Andrew offered a draw at move 26, then again at move 48 when black had even a greater advantage. Both draw offers were rejected and the fateful position occurred after move 56 (W Ke2 Rh8 b5 e3 g2 h3; B K55 Ra6 a3 f5). White moved b5 and if black had moved a2 and allowed his rook to be captured he would have queened his ‘a’ pawn and won the game. Instead play proceeded: 57 b5 Ra5, 58 b6 a2, 59 b7 Rb5, 60 Ra8 Rxb7, 61 Rxa2 after which the result was formalised over the next 15 moves or so.
