Stuart Wilson Trophy

Round Three results:

Jim Petrie ½ Greg Colwell ½

John Ryland 0 Andrew Robinson 1

Tony Howes 1 Brian Willcock 0

Andrew Mather 0 Martin Laizans 1

James Hiller – BYE

The first game to finish saw Jim and Greg work there way to a rook and pawn endgame.

With two pawns to one at the end, Jim decided that he could not break through and Greg agreed to the draw.

John played very aggressively and might have done better with his strong position but for the loss of material that eventually proved conclusive.

There were some quite complicated positions with both players taking well over 5 minutes for several key moves.

Near the end of his game, Brian was heard to say “this is getting too complicated for me”, always a good sign for his opponent.

In fact, Brian had played a sacrifice early that made for a very interesting game.

Tony said he thought the superior position Brian obtained was worth slightly less than the piece sacrificed to obtain it.

Andrew and Martin’s game seemed headed for a draw with a very even position near the end.

However, time trouble for white allowed black to gain a crucial advantage that led to a queen and victory.
