Flood Cup

Result:

Greg Colwell 1 Marcus Porter 0 (from Round 9)

The final game of the Flood Cup would also decide the winner of the Handicap Trophy.

A crucial miscalculation by Marcus changed the course of the match. Instead of recapturing, Marcus checked Greg’s king first, failing to see the knight that should have been recaptured could interpose and thereby be saved. After this Marcus managed to exchange queens so that he had an endgame with 3 pawns facing 1 down the queenside as some compensation for being a knight down (black squared bishops were also on the board). Greg managed to cut off the passed pawn threat by sacrificing his knight and ended up with a passed pawn himself which won the game.

Greg became the first player since Colin Schofield 20 years ago to win the Handicap Trophy for a second time. His win also meant he achieved his first top three finish in the Flood Cup.
