Flood Cup

Results:

John Ryland 0 Jim Petrie 1 (from Round 6)

Brian Willcock 1 Tony Howes 0 (from Round 7)

Marcus Porter 0 Ray Adams 1 (from Round 8) – On forfeit

Two games were played over the board tonight, with the other game awarded to Ray when Marcus was unable to attend tonight.

John had the ascendancy in his game with a material advantage early on. Jim offered a draw which was refused.

Then later in the game John lost concentration and missed a recapture which cost him his material advantage and ultimately the game.

This game was the last to finish on the night.

The other game saw Tony’s first loss in classically rated game since 20 August 2010.

With such a significant result it is worth hearing from the two players themselves:

Tony’s account: ‘My game with Brian was completely out of character - no wild sacrifices or attacks.

I won a pawn in a quiet game and managed to steer to a losing endgame, with interesting themes.’

Brian’s account: ‘The game was not typical of our encounters.

Flashy moves on my part were non-existent, nor were there complicated tactics difficult to discern.

Perhaps one reason was the voluntary exchange of Queens that took place early in the game.

The game settled down into a struggle over two portals for Rooks.

I blocked one with a pawn supported Bishop and managed to open another for a dangerous Rook attack.

The resolution of these struggles led to a Rooks and pawns endgame, with each having their Rook swallowing opposing pawns.

Tony then decided that my pawns would win and resigned.’
