Stuart Wilson Trophy

Results:

Marcus Porter 0 Andrew Robinson 1 (Round 9)

A close and complicated game was made asymmetrical after moves 25 to 27 when Marcus was forced to concede a knight and a bishop for a rook and a pawn, however gaining some measure of initiative down the clear ‘a’ file in the process. A long game of cat and mouse ensued with Marcus hedging for a draw around moves 37 to 47. Then Andrew forced the queens to swap then gained a pawn at the cost of exchanging off rooks as well. Then a long endgame with Andrew’s pawn structure holding while trying to push pawns down the centre, Marcus’ rook controlling files. A key shift occurred at move 69 where Marcus was unable to defend a pawn after his move 67. With both players at 5 minutes or less, Marcus sacked his rook on a bishop allowing the certain queening of one of his f-g-h-file pawns. Andrew was unable to stop it but managed to gain his own queen the move after Marcus queened and then with a series of checks force a queen exchange which led to a resignation on move 88.
